Our Mission

The Boston University Rocket Propulsion Group (BURPG) is an undergraduate research group that designs, manufactures, and launches rockets. Our current goal is to launch Starscraper, a 31 foot liquid bi-propellant launch vehicle, to 120 km.

Why we do it

We strive to continually redefine the expectations for amateur rocketry. More importantly, we take students and give them the skills and tools necessary to succeed. Through our work our members come to develop the skills to design and manufacture professional level rocket systems.  This not only helps with job hunting – as many of our members ultimately enter into careers at notable companies like Virgin Galactic, SpaceX and GE Aviation – but with the self-confidence necessary to be a successful engineer at any firm.

We hope to inspire people to do what may seem impossible – and to keep doing it because it's fun!

How we do it

Boston University Rocket Propulsion Group is staffed entirely by undergraduate students. We follow a goal-driven engineering process, allowing us to move very fast and efficiently from concept to construction. Everything we build is tested to its limits, proving the design and manufacturing capabilities before being put on a flight vehicle.

How we are funded

Rocket science is, by convention, incredibly expensive, but we challenge this preconceived notion. Our project is entirely funded by Boston University, private sponsors and donations. Our support community consists of people who believe in what we do, each supporting the project with regular contributions. Companies excited to be part of this endeavor sponsor many of our tools, materials, and consumables.
